The Spiritual Realm: What’s Really Behind the Veil

Every October, we lean in close to the darkness. The Bible says the world behind the world is just as real as gravity.

It’s Halloween today…

The streets are lined with jack-o’-lanterns, skeletons hang from porches, and Netflix is full of haunted houses and exorcisms.

Every October, our culture leans in close to the darkness. People are peering at the edge of mystery, asking questions we usually keep buried under the fluorescent lights of daily life.

Questions like: Is there something beyond what I can see? Are ghosts real? What happens when we die?

We create fantasy novels and horror stories around these questions because it’s easier to mythologize than meditate. However, the truth is that Biblically, there is an unseen spiritual realm that we must be aware of.

Halloween, for all its fun and fantasy, scratches at something deeper… something the Bible has spoken about all along: the world behind the world.

The Bible never treats the unseen as superstition.

From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture assumes that reality is layered. The Bible teaches us that there’s more happening around us than our five senses can perceive.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

According to Scripture, the spiritual realm is just as real as gravity.

There are two orders of spiritual beings:

  • The good—God and His holy angels, the servants of light.
  • The fallen—the devil and his demons, the agents of rebellion.

The Bible describes angels as active forces woven into the fabric of creation.

Demons are not red cartoon villains with pitchforks. They’re fallen angels. Spiritual beings who once basked in God’s glory but chose their own way.

Revelation 12:9 tells us, “The great dragon was hurled down, that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.”

They operate in shadows, seeking to distort what God made good. Yet even they remain on a leash. They’re defeated, though still dangerous, until the final judgment.

Genesis 1:27 tells us we are made in the image of God. That means every person carries not just flesh and bone, but spirit and breath. We each have a soul that is wired for eternity.

We live in both worlds at once: the visible and the invisible. The physical and the spiritual aren’t separate realities; they’re two halves of the same design.

The choices you make, the love you give, and the sins you fight all ripple beyond the material.

The spiritual realm isn’t “out there.” It’s right here, overlapping the ordinary.

In our scientific age, people want proof. They ask, “Where’s the empirical evidence for a spiritual world?”

But think about it… Some of the most profound truths can’t be measured under a microscope. Love, beauty, justice, meaning. They’re invisible, but undeniably real.

The most powerful evidence for the spiritual realm is testimonial. Billions of people around the world have encountered it across cultures and centuries.

Every religion on earth points, however imperfectly, to a reality beyond the material.

And the Bible stands alone as the most compelling witness of all. The Bible testifies to a God who reigns above all and a spiritual world intertwined with our own.

Jesus Himself pulled back the curtain again and again.

He cast out demons. He spoke to the wind and waves. He talked with Moses and Elijah on the mountain. He healed with a word, raised the dead, and said plainly,

“You are from below; I am from above… I am not of this world.” (John 8:23)

You can deny the spiritual realm, but to do so would be to deny the words and works of Jesus.

The scariest part of the spiritual realm isn’t ghosts, it’s indifference.

Satan’s greatest trick has never been possession or poltergeists. It’s distraction. He’d rather have us laugh at the idea of demons than take them seriously.

But make no mistake: there is a battle.
It’s not fought in graveyards, but in hearts.
Not with spells or symbols, but with faith and truth.

You are not powerless in this world between worlds. In Christ, you are sealed by the Spirit, armed with the Word, and surrounded by angels.

The unseen realm trembles at the name of Jesus.

The Bible’s message about the spiritual realm isn’t meant to terrify. It’s meant to clarify.

Yes, there are dark forces at work, but they are finite.
Yes, there are mysteries, but God is sovereign over them all.

Evil is real, but it’s on borrowed time. Light wins.

And one day, the veil will lift. The realms will meet. The King of kings will rule visibly over heaven and earth, and every shadow will dissolve in His light.

Until then, we walk by faith, not by sight.
